Thomas Edison, who had virtually no formal education, was granted 1,093 patents for inventions that ranged from the lightbulb, typewriter, electric pen, phonograph, motion picture camera and alkaline storage battery.
Was it his practice of sitting in his rocking chair every afternoon, holding a large stone in his palm?
Edison would rock himself to sleep only to be jolted awake when the stone hit the floor.
In this way, he would access lower brainwave frequencies, normally only experienced during sleep; brainwaves associated with greater creativity, focus and concentration.
Edison clearly valued the ability to access lower brainwave frequencies.
Sadly, he did not appreciate that the Yogis had developed a practice over 5,000 years earlier that would have helped him to do this more efficiently.
NSDR (Non Sleep Deep Relaxation) or Yoga Nidra, is both a relaxation technique and a meditation technique. It is the sister science of Yoga postures and was developed by the Yogis to quiet the mind and support living at lower brainwave frequencies, also referred to as higher states of consciousness.
Yoga Nidra consists of a series of body, breath and awareness techniques designed to relax the body to the point where the body thinks it is falling asleep. At this point, the sleep reflex kicks in and the body enters a sleep cycle, accessing the alpha, theta and delta brainwave frequencies.
The Yogis appreciated the potential of sleep to support entering deep states of meditation. During the sleep cycle, brain wave activity drops from the typical 100cps in the waking state to less than 4cps in the deep sleep state.
Most experienced meditators report accessing deeper states of meditation in Yoga Nidra because when we fall asleep, our bodies effortlessly enter lower brain wave frequencies as part of the sleep cycle.
Each time you practice Yoga Nidra, your body takes you on a sleep cycle and provides the opportunity for you to practice staying awake at lower brainwave frequencies. Over time, you stay conscious for more of the practice, which means that you are staying conscious at lower and lower brainwave frequencies, frequencies that equate to greater creativity, focus and concentration.
And when you lose consciousness, you are giving your body all the benefits of sleep.
In this way, the practice is a win-win.
“It takes a different mind to solve the problem than the mind that created it”. Einstein
Why Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra supports us to access ‘the different mind’ Einstein referred to when he said “it takes a different mind to solve the problem than the mind that created it”.
The practice was designed to support the experience of lower brainwave frequencies while also building the scaffolding, strengthening the neural pathways and muscIe memory associated with those frequencies, to make a permanent shift.
In this way, Yoga Nidra is the perfect tool at the perfect time to create the 21st Century Mind and to gain the insights needed to solve many of the world’s most pressing challenges.
I am delivering an experiential session at ESRAD 2025 (The European Society for Research in Adult Development) on June 12th. Sign up today for my session to get some more theory, to experience a live Yoga Nidra session and to have the opportunity to ask questions about the practice.

Gráinne is very warm and has a trusting energy. I feel very fortunate to have come across someone with such an interesting approach and sense for the spirit and soul.
Grainne’s support made a remarkable difference to my wellbeing. She helped me manage burnout during a crisis and provided tools to make me feel resourced and supported.
Grainne has been instrumental in helping me balance my work and home life more effectively. She gave me frameworks, offered thoughtful questions, and relevant resources that helped me feel grounded while managing competing priorities, making this balance not just achievable but sustainable.
My coach Grainne guides and nurtures all of me, as a leader and as a human being.
I am the co-lead of a team of 89 FTEs in Europe, going through an internal change process in Europe and I highly appreciate Grainne’s professional background. She knows what I am talking about when I tell her about the challenges in my leadership role.
Her powerful coaching enables me to look at my challenges from different angles. I love the unique mix of tools and methods Grainne brings to our sessions – always showing up with her heart and mind. She lives her values and her teachings. We structure my organigram, we put major topics or colleagues into constellations so that I can see more clearly where I stand thus being able to act in a more thought through way. Grainne guides me through Yoga Nidra sessions that empower me on stressful days. I particularly enjoy it when Grainne takes me on a visualization journey that enables me to go so much deeper and discover hidden solutions.
Working with Grainne has been incredibly insightful for me. She creates a safe space to explore the root of what’s holding you back and encourages you to discover what you truly want.
Her approach guides you through challenges with warmth, kindness, and insight.
She’s inspiring and genuinely invested in your growth. I always leave our sessions feeling clearer, more self aware and confident.
Grainne and Mark [Harrod]’s work with our senior leadership team at The Young Foundation created a genuinely safe and productive space for us to work on some of the key issues relating to culture and ways of working, both within the leadership team and more widely.
I can wholeheartedly recommend their approach, their professionalism, wisdom and empathy in this work.
Grainne skilfully helps individuals and teams tap into a hidden energy, resource, wisdom and power to reach new levels of productivity and performance.
She brings a wealth of her own knowledge, wisdom and techniques to resource the people she supports and does so with a calmness and energy that is always welcomed.
Grainne has a super style, she is an individual who puts individuals at ease whilst also being able to ask the questions which will open up both the individual and team thinking.
She also has an innate curiosity and therefore researched all the key information which would enable us to consider some key questions and get some key answers!
She is a skillful influencer as not everyone on the team was originally supportive of our approach but now recognise the value of the work we have done.
I think the proof is in our results, we have surpassed our wide ranging goals.
Personally I am truly grateful to Grainne for her support as initially I was the person driving this change, the great thing is that it is now owned by the team which speaks for itself.
